Statement for September 11, 2009
The Internet (2009-09-11)
On September 11, 2001, the United States and the world witnessed tragic and horrific events when the Twin Towers of New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, DC were attacked early that morning. General Education Online, on the 8th anniversary of the tragedy (as we have every year), will temporarily suspend operations in tribute to the victims (and their families) of these tragedies including the many heroes who worked tirelessly during and after the attacks of September 11 to clear the debris and to rescue those trapped inside. Their courage and dedication are a true testament to the human spirit.
General Education Online again reiterates its commitment to both open-source and open content. In the years since September 11, 2001, we have expanded our portal at http://www.findaschool.org to include over 10,000 schools; have started providing storm related information via the Education Disaster Information System (EDIS) blog at http://disaster.findaschool.net; and continue to expand our community offerings through various projects as we roll them out of the planning phases.
General Education Online continues work on v4 of the portal, a major commitment to continue providing a high quality, stable open resource to educators, students, and researchers worldwide. Along with v4 of the findaschool.org portal, General Education Online continues to devote resources to maintaining the information contained on the website.
Since 1995, I have personally committed time, money, and resources to General Education Online. I am reiterating my commitment to continue doing so in the years to come. Along with my personal contributions and commitment, Simple End User Linux (SEUL) has remained a steadfast supporter of our work, providing resources to continue working on the findaschool.org portal and our other community projects.
